I bumped into a guy yesterday while doing a physical test.

This guy was a Pro bodybuilder. He weighs about 300 pounds ~280 show weight. He actually impressed me, not because the guy was so big, I don’t care anything about that, but because the guy was actually able to move and pass the physical. Granted he is 24 years old and used to play football. He out ran several people in the mile, and not only that, he actually ran it smart, he took it easy for most of the run, then had a solid ‘kick’ at the end.

After being impressed with this guy, I was directed to look him up on YouTube – Trey Brewer. I watched several videos of him talking about his sponsors and a couple of him posing/working out. This one at 1:23 killed me though – the guy is walking on a treadmill and he has to move 1 leg around the other, just to walk. That’s a bit much.

All this got me thinking that yes, bodybuilding is a sport. Trey’s workout goals are directed towards bodybuilding. Trey has obviously worked hard towards that goal of showing Large amounts of muscle packed onto his frame. And Trey is a sponsored Pro bodybuilder.

However, for me the beauty of this fact is that I’m no longer interested in being a bodybuilder. I’m interested in being ready for any crazy activity that me and my friends may come up with any given weekend. Whether that is the Mt bike race I did last weekend, or rock climbing this weekend, or ultimate frisbee, or chasing the neighbors kids around the yard.

My workouts keep me injury free, and keep my metabolism revved up, so I can go to dinner with friends and have beer and not feel like I have to do an hour of cardio the next day to counter-balance the calories…..

Make sure that your workouts compliment what you want to do for activities. The motivation for my training comes from the motto: “Train for Go, not for show!”
